The Southern Alberta Lego Users Group delighted and wowed attendees at Supertrain 2012. This event, geared to train lovers of all ages, was held from April 21 to the 22nd. It is Canada’s largest train show with a display area of over 60, 000 square feet, featuring model railroad layouts, garden railroads, photo and art exhibits, live demonstrations and clinics, mini-shops, and much, much more. Yet out of all these varied and exciting attractions, the Lego train display definitely stands out as a “must see” exhibit.

Supertrain 2012 was SALUG’s most successful year with a collaborative build that was simply awesome. The SALUG train display had all the features to excite the senses and coax even the most mundane of people to get immersed in the complexity of creativity. The display had something for everyone, including city and country scenes, a train yard, and even aliens attacking downtown. The SALUG exhibit was an instant hit with conventional train hobbyists as well. They openly commented on how well put together it was and were amazed at the creativity and ingenuity of the Lego builders. As a result of SALUG’s popularity and extensive drawing power, it has once again won First Place in the coveted “Fun Layout Category.” But it is also true that creating a successful attraction of such high caliber is definitely no small feat.

It takes determination and fortitude in coordinating Lego hobbyists who come from all walks of life and varying ages to come together and create something absolutely sensational. Albert Dethmers and Mike Roth, who was instrumental in accomplishing this task, were pleased at how well things turned out. The builders, who numbered 15, also were quite happy at how the exhibit jelled and how the attendees favorably received the fruits of the Lego hobbyists’ efforts.
The Supertrain organizers were absolutely delighted at the success of the SALUG display and look forward to seeing SALUG’s creativity in motion for Supertrain 2013. It also should be noted that Supertrain 2012 had the highest number of SALUG members who volunteered in various capacities at the show going the “extra mile” in making the train show an event to remember and a destination to re-visit.
